Don’t let your children be a Flake Over Break…Encourage your child to read! Research states, to succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. I have listed 14 ways to get your children reading over winter break.  These are not the only ways, so be creative, but please encourage your child to read each and every day even though it is winter break.

First things first, sit down with your child(ren) and make a plan and set a goal!

  1. Just read anything!   Have your child read christmas cards, receipes, christmas toy ads, coupons,
  2. Check out 10 books from the public library
  3. Read a book by the fire.
  4. Read song lyrics
  5. If traveling, take books with you
  6. Write Thank-You Notes
  7. Play Family Games like Apples to Apples, Boogle, Scrabble, Scattergories, etc
  8. Read books on EPIC!  Books for kids (60 day trial free for parents!)
  9. Listen to books on Youtube: Type in Christmas Books Playlist or Children’s Books Playlist and get tons of books read aloud to you and your children
  10. Download the OverDrive App to connect to the Greensboro public library and read or listen to ebooks
  11. Have a living room picnic and have everyone read their favorite picture book or a chapter in a book
  12. Listen to audio books while riding in the car
  13. Read to a grandparent
  14. Read in your Pajamas

Remember, this is just a sample of what you can do to get your children reading over break.  If you read over break, I encourage you to come and let me know what you read. I am always looking for a good book.
