LEADING THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM CERTIFICATE & CORD

Leading Through Volunteerism Initiative at Cornerstone Charter Academy

Cornerstone Charter Academy promotes leadership and community service from our student body and we would like to see our students push to achieve higher levels of community service to help them both academically and personally.  Community service promotes responsibility and helps students grow their self-esteem as well as give back to their communities.  It can assist students and teachers additionally with making connections in the community and assist students with gaining professional experience.  During the tenure of the Class of 2019 Freshman Seminar course, our 9th grade students logged well over 2,000 community service hours.  Ms. Katelyn Sheets, former Freshman Seminar instructor, and Ms. Leigh Bell, school counselor, have proposed and received approval for Cornerstone Charter Academy-CFA to offer our high school students a Leading Through Volunteerism Cord or Leading Through Volunteerism Certificate.  These honors would be bestowed upon recipients at their respective graduation exercises for completing community service hours and/or completing service learning projects.

Leading Through Volunteerism Cord: Students will have logged 250+ community service hours by May of their senior year.  These hours will be documented and initialed by their point of contact for each individual community service event.  The cord will be worn with their graduation cap and gown at graduation ceremonies

Leading Through Volunteerism Certificate: Students will have logged 100+ community service hours by May of their senior year.  These hours will be documented and initialed by their point of contact for each individual community service event.  The certificates will be presented to recipients at their graduation exercises.
These community service hours and/or service learning project hours that apply towards the cord and/or certificate must be logged between the summer after the student’s promotion to 9th grade at CCA and May 1st of their senior year.  These volunteer hours must be unpaid and must be strictly direct volunteer hours.  For example, volunteer hours earned on a summer mission trip must not include time spent preparing for the trip, traveling to and from the trip, traveling done during the trip, and/or socializing or eating during the trip.  Only hours spent in direct service during the trip can be documented.

Students who plan to work towards this goal MUST indicate their interest and obtain information from Ms. Sheets and/or Ms. Bell.  You can indicate interest by signing up here:https://docs.google.com/a/cornerstonecharterk8.com/spreadsheets/d/16S8nx1ej4bfXRaEWydupLp5jYzEgWst3gzBKLAjQBQc/edit?usp=sharing

Students working towards the certificate or cord must complete the Volunteer Documentation paperwork provided to them and keep up with their hours throughout their high school tenure.  This documentation must be turned in by the student at the end of each school year to be photocopied and documented at CCA as well.  Students may also need to log their hours into an online program such as Noble Hour.
In order to meet the goal of at least 100 hours of community service/service learning for the Leading Through Volunteerism Certificate, students need to earn at least 25 hours of community service each of their four years of high school.
In order to meet the goal of at least 250 hours of community service/service learning for the Leading Through Volunteerism Cord, students can use this schedule below as a potential guide in helping them plan:
9th grade: 50 hours
10th grade: 75 hours
11th grade: 75 hours
12th grade: 50 hours
