Course Description:

This course is intended to introduce lifelong physical/health education, and healthy personal choices.  Instruction will be focused on developing an understanding of 15 prominent health concepts. These health concepts include (1) Making Healthy Decisions, (2) Personality/Self Esteem/Emotions, (3) Managing Stress, (4) Mental Disorders/Suicide, (5) Family Relationships, (6) Digestion and Excretion, (7) Movement/Coordination, (8) Cardiovascular/Respiratory Health, (9)  Exercise/Lifelong Fitness, (10) Alcohol, (11) Tobacco, (12) Preventing Drug Abuse, (13) Adolescence/Adulthood, (14) Infectious Diseases, (15) Chronic Diseases/Disabilities.  Ongoing assessment includes approximately 10% cumulative tests.
The physical education program includes skill development and the application of rules and strategies of complex difficulty in the following different movement forms: (1) health-related fitness activities (cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition), (2) aerobic exercise, (3) team sports, (4) individual and dual sports, (5) gymnastics, (6) outdoor pursuits, (7) dance, and (8) recreational games.  Ongoing assessment includes both written and performance-based skill evaluations.
Text Book Used

We will be using the Pearson Health Book.  This book is available for preview by parents two weeks prior to health beginning.  We will be covering the following chapters 1-5, 10-13, 15-17, and 21 & 23.  To preview the book, please email Erin Shoemaker at  She will set up a time and place for you to preview the book.
General Rules:  Be on time, be safe, be prepared, be respectful, and be responsible.
Preparation for Class: Students need a pocket folder, email address, and pencil
Late Work:

Classwork, homework, projects, and tests must be completed by all students. Any classwork or homework not turned in on the due date is to be completed. However, for each day an assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted from the grade, up to 5 days. (*Teacher discretion with Director Permission)
Missed Work:

It is the responsibility of the student, with help from the parent, to obtain all missed assignments from the appropriate teacher. Classwork and homework that is missed due to an excused absence must be made up within two days upon his return to school, or within the same number of days that the student was absent. If a student doesn’t complete the assignment, the Late Work Policy applies. Teachers are not required to give assignments in advance of absences, but may do so at their discretion.
